AR-15 Ammo Questions

Just bought a Smith&Wesson M&P 15 Sport.
it's a 5.56.

Q 1) I know that if you have an AR-15 chambered for 5.56, you can safely run .223 Rem in it, but NOT the other way around.
So you guys with 5.56, are you running 5.56 or .223 - do you have a preference, and why?

Q 2) Any brand preferences?

Q 3) Where are the best places to find bargains, and what have you been paying lately?

Here's the crux of the article:

5.56mm NATO - The best bet for those looking to shoot high volumes of 5.56mm ammunition without an emphasis on tack-driving accuracy or precision, 5.56 barrels from reliable machine shops will outshoot most humans while also keeping pressures within normal limits. Cheap 5.56 barrels often disappoint.

Summary: Buy a well-made rifle with the chamber you want based on your needs, shoot the right ammo in it, and have fun. For most people, especially those not sure of what type of shooting they’ll be doing, a 5.56mm chamber is the best all-around choice. It is my fervent hope that this article has helped you better understand the topic at hand.

Looks like I'll be running the 5.56

Congrats on the newest member of the family!

That's a good buy through SWFA, better jump on that. You know the quality and warranty on the Vortex optics.;)

The M&P will handle both. I roll my own to 223 standards. Not really much difference between the two worth noting. 556 chambers have a little more wiggle room for better reliability.

Basicly what I said in so many less words. And just think the world didn't end.
You guys should sell ammo at gunshows. It's amazing what BS guys come in with that they seen written on the internet and believe.
If you seen it on the internet site don't believe most of it. It this on the net? LOL
As my son says "setting around on the internet at 3:00AM in their underwear does not make them a expert."

Cheap bulk ammo.....
Sgammo gets a lot of my business but I check ammoseek and other engines to make sure of the pricing.

Prices....
M193 (55g 5.56 fmj) is drifting below $0.38 and was below 0.35 easily before newtown.
M885 (62g steel core similar to ss109) has a painted green tip is going$0.40 or lower, was 0.35 before.
You will pay more for lake city and if on stripper clips.
.223 should be less in the same configuration but if you start getting into other bullet types you can go up to over $1 per round.

Examples of the really expensive stuff would be TAP round and actual 5.56 mk262 (77g smk used for long distance accuracy and made by black hills).

A good plinking and decent accuracy load is the magtech load here it's a 62 grain fmj with NO steel core.

You can also run steel cased but you will wear out your barrel sooner. Luckgunner did a great and the difference in round count was about the cost of a new barrel. So you are probably out the same amount in the end.

Standard box of .223 is 20 rounds. That makes it 0.60 per round. That's a bad price and basically almost as high as it went when the gun community was going full panic mode after Dec 2012.

Wasn't for sure! Was just throwing that out there. As I don't own a .223 so I'm not familiar with the price of the round.
