Cool that is it. Dang thing looked like it was trying to breed itself. JohnRoh and I saw it while hanging stands. Looked like something outta a Sci-Fi flick.
 
Like the link shows it's a type of wasp. Thought it came from overseas somewhere but wasn't sure exactly. Those things showed up on a lot of softball fields the last couple of years, burrowing into the ground around the fence lines. Pretty fuggin intimidating looking that's for sure!!

They don't really sting though. Very docile.

I'd beg to differ on that one! I got hammered by one and it was like someone hit me with an ice pick!!! It stung me on the collar bone through a shirt and wife beater. The sting causes a burning sensation that ran down my arm like someone dumped boiling water on it. Thankfully I'm not allergic to bee stings. That thing would have put Cottis 6' under!!!!
